Historical and Mythological BBQ Ties to Halloween
- The origin of Barbacoa: The word barbecue comes from the Caribbean Taino word “barbacoa,” the name of the raised wooden structure used for smoking meat. In ancient folklore across various cultures, cooking meat over open flames at night was a common ritual during autumn harvest festivals to honor ancestors and ward off evil spirits—The exact roots of Halloween!
- Vampire Repellent: Traditional BBQ rubs heavily feature garlic and onion powders. If you believe the folklore, a heavily rubbed, slow-smoked brisket or pork shoulder is technically the ultimate culinary defense against vampires!
- The “Witch’s Brew” Glaze: Many seasonal Competition BBQ teams craft “Ghost Pepper,” or “Witch’s Brew,” glazes during October, using dark ingredients such as molasses, black food coloring, black cherries, and hyper-spicy peppers to give the meat a dark, ominous, and fiery finish.
- If you want to keep evil spirits away, salt should do the trick! Historically, SALT acts as a protective shield against malevolent entities and evil spirits—utilizing salt in this manner has been a practice dating back to ancient times…Even if you are not a true believer, it can’t hurt to sprinkle a bit of salt across your threshold and your doorstep, thereby preventing any unwelcome spirits from entering your dwelling!
- The Library of Congress www.blogs.loc.gov reports that the colors black and orange trace back to the Celtic Festival of “Samhain,” a Gaelic Festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter—or the “darker half” of the year. Thus, black represents the “death” of summer while orange represents the life of the fall harvest.
- Halloween itself dates back more than 2,000 years. People used to carve turnips instead of pumpkins for decorations. Halloween has evolved quite a bit throughout the years, over the centuries! Today, Halloween is a blend of old-fashioned traditions and new customs.
