Fact or Fiction? The “Legendary” Brisket Migration of 2024

Fact or FictionBBQ TALL TALES

The setting for our imaginative BBQ story is the well-known Texas BBQ Competition: The Annual Texas Hill Country BBQ held in Dripping Springs, Texas. It is a 3 Day BBQ Competition Showdown. In September of 2024, Jake “The Pitmaster” Rodriguez, pulled off a First Place Victory as well as a perfect 180 score for his brisket! The Annual Texas Hill Country BBQ Championship is said to be “one of the most prestigious BBQ competitions in the State of Texas!”

The Human Brisket Migration Train

To set the scene for our tale, Jake had been smoking his championship brisket for 14 hours straight…when disaster struck. The massive oak tree in his backyard, weakened by the previous week’s storm, chose that exact moment to crash down across his fence line, taking out the power lines to his prized offset smoker with just 2 hours left until the cook-off. His neighbor Maria heard the crash and the commotion and rushed over to find Jake staring at his nearly perfect brisket, now sitting in a cold smoker. Without hesitation, Maria grabbed one end of the enormous cutting board and told Jake that her smoker was already fired up and running for her pulled pork entry into the cook-off. “Let’s move this beauty!” said Maria. What followed was presumably the most careful brisket migration in BBQ history! Jake and Maria, along with 3 other neighbors– who materialized at just the right moment—out of nowhere—formed a “Human Chain” to transport the precious cargo across 3 backyards. Neighbor Mrs. Chen contributed her infrared thermometer, while Teenage Tommy ran interference: clearing lawn chairs and garden gnomes from their path! The Neighborly Human Chain slid Jake’s brisket directly into Maria’s smoker, just as the internal temp hit the stall!

COMMUNITY!

For the next 2 hours, the entire neighborhood became heavily invested in that piece of meat: People brought out lawn chairs to sit around Maria’s smoker; someone started a betting pool on the brisket’s final temperature; and Jake’s wife brought out a cooler full of beer! When Jake finally cut into that brisket during the cook-off competition and revealed that perfect pink smoke ring, he knew that he had something really special. Jake’s First-Place trophy wasn’t the real prize; the real victory was discovering that great BBQ brings people together, even when everything goes sideways in a cook! The competition judges never knew that championship brisket had traveled through 3 backyards and been attended to by half the neighborhood. Sometimes the best BBQ stories aren’t about the meat; they are about the community that forms around the fire!

It Takes A Village

Jake “The Pitmaster” Rodriguez assumedly, finally has that 2024 Championship Ring to prove his prestigious Grand Champion BBQ Win at The Annual Texas Hill Country BBQ Competition … allegedly, along with the $5,000.00 Prize Money!  At forthcoming neighborhood cook-outs, it is rumored that Maria oftentimes brings up her quick-thinking and decisive action, along with a nod to her vital smoker, enabling Jake to finally win a Perfect 180 Points in the brisket category. After placing 2nd for the last 2 years, Jake was beyond thrilled to not only receive that Perfect 180 Point Score for his brisket, but to also be crowned The Grand Champion! The judges were blown away by the taste of Jake’s brisket, that perfect smoke ring which he achieved, and they loved the way the meat pulled apart like butter. Jake’s brisket was flawless! Maria was not only Jake’s neighbor; she was also a retired chef who had moved to Austin, Texas to specifically envelop herself into the BBQ scene! During the September 2024 Annual Texas Hill Country BBQ competition, her pulled pork came in 3rd place. Neighbor Mrs. Chen who had loaned her infrared meat thermometer to the “Brisket Rescue,” is a Food Blogger. Mrs. Chen documented the entire story on her Instagram! And Teenage Tommy Chen? He is now Jake’s official Competition Assistant!…Intriguingly, “Keeping it in the family neighborhood,” Tommy Chen is also Food Blogger Mrs. Chen’s grandson!

The Technical Details

That crashed oak tree didn’t just knock out power, it created a perfect 15-minute window, where Jake’s smoker temperature dropped from 225 degrees Fahrenheit to 180 degrees Fahrenheit…any longer, and the brisket would have been ruined! Maria’s smoker ran slightly hotter at 235 degrees Fahrenheit, which actually helped Jake’s brisket push through the stall faster than expected!

The Aftermath

The bemusing story became legendary in Austin, Texas BBQ circles. Jake now caters Maria’s Family Gatherings for free. And Jake and Maria Santos have become BBQ competition partners! Maria Santos has that perfect combination of culinary expertise along with that BBQ passion that made her the ideal neighbor to save Jake’s Championship Brisket! Chef Maria Santos specialized in Fusion Cuisine in San Antonio, prior to moving to Austin to delve into her secret love of BBQ! The BBQ contest judges still have no idea about the “Smoker Switch,” until…Jake plans to reveal it in his cookbook: the title asserted to be: “Backyard to Champion: A Pitmaster’s Journey.”

Whimsically, it is declared that Mrs. Chen streamed the entire “Brisket Rescue” Live. Her Instagram Live Stream went viral, and supposedly Food Network picked up the story! Mrs. Chen’s Instagram Live captured everything from the neighborhood kids pulling items out of the way to making a path for the “Human Brisket Chain” to move through three backyards, to the “Brisket Hopping” throughout the neighborhood! The story is already becoming “BBQ FOLKLORE” on the Texas BBQ Scene! Reportedly, Mrs. Chen now chronicles the Neighborhood BBQ Team’s exploits and adventures! Purportedly, that 2024 BBQ Win at The Annual Texas Hills Country BBQ Competition changed the entire trajectory of Jake’s life: he quit his day job as an HVAC Technician in order to focus on full-time BBQ competitions. Maria Santos became Jake’s business partner, and now they run BBQ Competition Classes from Jake’s backyard. Tommy Chen became a legitimate Pitmaster Apprentice and then assumedly attended The University of Texas at Austin to specialize in a degree in Culinary Arts, as well as continuing to be a part of “The Neighborhood BBQ Team” with Jake and Maria. Mrs. Chen’s hashtag was: #neighborhoodcrestview

The Book?

“Backyard to Championship: A Pitmaster’s Journey,” is anticipated to debut in the beginning of 2027?? Jake supposedly organized the structure of his book chronologically throughout his BBQ journey: starting out from his first disastrous backyard attempts, such as turning a $40 brisket into charcoal powder! Jake moves through his early competition failures, then culminates in that legendary September 2024 Championship. Each chapter focuses on a specific cut of meat, but also weaves in the personal stories and various lessons learned through failures. However, what is meant to make his cookbook even more unique is its “Community Aspect.” Presumably,

Maria Santos is co-authoring several chapters, sharing her fusion techniques and how traditional Mexican flavors can enhance classic Texas BBQ cooking. There is also an entire

section focusing on “CRISIS COOKING!” dedicated to equipment failures, and those all-too-important “BACK-UP PLANS!” —obviously, inspired by “The Oak Tree Incident!” Tommy Chen is also allegedly collaborating on the cookbook: providing all of the photos, getting his own chapter covering how young Pitmasters use technology and social media in their culinary BBQ, while respecting traditional BBQ methods. Purportedly, Tommy Chen’s “Burnt Ends Technique” is covered in the book, as well as Mrs. Chen’s “Secretly Famous Korean-Inspired Short Ribs”—apparently, Mrs. Chen has been quietly perfecting her own BBQ Korean-inspired dish!

The conclusion to our fanciful story is brilliantly tied together with the highly anticipated (and fingers double crossed!??} upcoming release of Jake Rodriguez’s cookbook, “Backyard to Champion: A Pitmaster’s Journey.” Ultimately, the culmination of this fantastical story is the way that BBQ brought an entire neighborhood together, to discovering neighbors’ hidden talents, to sharing recipes and Tall Tales, Yarns, and Fables, to sitting together around a backyard firepit, a smoker, and a grill: And especially, to enjoying those seemingly simple yet tremendously meaningful moments of life, while gathered together.

“There’s something about sitting around a fire outdoors that just resets you…No noise, just fire, fresh air, good company, and time slowing down for a bit.” – Steven Kelly, Survival Instructor
