NEBS Heads Toward Championship Weekend After Big Moves in Masters Points Race

Rough Cut Q and Grandpa Val’s BBQ finish strong as Wrentham prepares to host two competitions, with national opportunities on the line.

The final weekend for New England Barbecue Society Masters points delivered a shake-up, with Rough Cut Q and Grandpa Val’s BBQ making significant gains following strong performances in New Jersey. Now, attention turns to Wrentham, Massachusetts, where NEBS will close its competition season November 7–8 with two sanctioned events and a championship field built through months of competition.

The Commander’s Cup and the NEBS Invitational Championship will take place at Wrentham Legion Post 225, 592 South Street. With 42 teams qualified for the invitational and three random drawings announced to complete the field, the season’s closing weekend is taking shape.

Rough Cut Q Makes a Major Move

Rough Cut Q delivered one of the most notable advances in the final Masters points update, climbing five positions in the overall standings. The team also jumped eight places in Pork and three in Ribs, turning its New Jersey results into meaningful gains across multiple rankings.

That combination makes Rough Cut Q a team to watch heading into the season finale. Moving up in two meat categories while improving its overall position reflects a productive closing effort in a points race where every available opportunity mattered.

Rough Cut Q had already secured its invitational qualification through a second-place overall finish at the Grand American Barbecue New York State Championship Open. Its latest results add another accomplishment to a season that earned the team a place in the championship field.

Grandpa Val’s BBQ Finishes Strong

Grandpa Val’s BBQ also made substantial progress, climbing seven positions in Pork and two in Ribs. Those gains gave the team a strong finish to the Masters points season and another reason to celebrate its New Jersey performance.

The team earned its place in the invitational with a first-place Brisket finish on the second day of the Southern New England Barbecue Throwdown. With that qualification already secured, the latest movement adds Pork and Ribs success to its season’s accomplishments.

Let It Smoke Barbecue and Sticks & Stones also gained ground. Let It Smoke climbed three positions in Chicken, while Sticks & Stones moved up three places in Brisket. Together, these results gave the final points weekend plenty of movement beyond the overall standings.

Two Competitions Close the Season

The November 7–8 weekend brings two distinct opportunities to the same Wrentham venue. The Commander’s Cup is open to all teams, while the NEBS Invitational Championship—known as “The NIC”—features teams that have earned or received qualification.

That distinction broadens the finale’s reach. Teams don’t need an invitational berth to compete in the Commander’s Cup, while qualified competitors can pursue the NIC championship.

For cooks making plans, NEBS has announced registration information for both events, along with a NIC cooks packet. Competitors should review the materials for their event carefully as they prepare for the final sanctioned weekend of the NEBS season.

A Championship With National Opportunities

The NIC Grand Champion will leave Wrentham with more than a title. The winner will receive one fee-waived Golden Ticket to the 2027 World Food Championships, giving them a chance to take the next step beyond the regional season.

The same champion will also qualify for the Grand American BBQ Invitational Contest. Those two rewards add another dimension: one championship performance can open the door to further competition on two fronts.

For teams that spent the season chasing qualifying finishes or racking up Team of the Year points, the stakes are clear. Their work has earned them a place in the field; Wrentham will decide who claims the championship and the opportunities that come with it.

Forty-Two Teams Earn Their Places

The published qualification list, dated October 18, includes 42 teams. Their routes into the field range from overall finishes and individual meat-category victories to pass-down qualifications, at-large bids, and NEBS Classic Team of the Year standings.

Among the qualifiers are Smokin Hoggz BBQ, American Barbecue Company, Paddy McQs and Grandpa Val’s BBQ, all earning berths through the Southern New England Barbecue Throwdown. House of Que and ELJEFE SMOKE qualified through the New Jersey KnoQ-out Campground BBQ Series.

Mass in May’s second day produced qualifiers Brookside BBQ, Fire At The End of the Day, Q Shanty and Grumpy Old Patriot Barbeque. Other qualifying teams include Canyon Riders BBQ, Humphrey’s BBQ, Mullen It Over BBQ, and Titans of BBQ.

Regional Events Build the Field

The list also shows how many competitions contributed to the championship lineup. Baller BBQ, Hillside BBQ, and Ocean Grove BBQ qualified at BBQ Battle at the Bow. Sticks & Stones BBQ, Squealing Reels BBQ, and Smoke Sisters earned their places at SlateBelt Smokeout.

Wise Guys BBQ qualified with a third-place overall finish at Miller’s Crossing Annual BBQ Cookoff. Rudy Q and For Love of the Que earned berths at Tavern on Three Smoke Off for the Veterans, while Pray For Me BBQ qualified at Baby Mac’s BBQ Smoker Challenge.

Hog Wash BBQ and Broke Chair BBQ received at-large bids. Eight additional teams qualified through NEBS Classic Team of the Year standings: Lord of the Smoke Rings, Smokeshow, Juicy Thighz, Ken-Q, Skull & Bones, Swamp Donkey BBQ Company, Schmores Small Batch BBQ, and Scallywags.

Kids Q Winners Have Their Own Prize

The weekend’s opportunities extend to younger competitors. The Kids Q winners at both the Commander’s Cup and the NEBS Invitational Championship will each receive one fee-waived Golden Ticket to the 2027 World Food Championships.

That puts a significant reward within reach at each event. Alongside the adult championship races, the Kids Q competitions will give the next generation of cooks their own chance to finish the season with a memorable achievement.

Points, Registration and the Final Countdown

NEBS has made its 2026 Masters Team of the Year results available through its shared Google files, including overall standings and individual team points. Previous files remain available for comparison, allowing teams to track changes between updates. The NEBS website also provides points information and the 2026 Team of the Year rules.

The TOY Committee encourages competitors to report questions or concerns to to*@**bs.org so results remain accurate.

With the final Masters points weekend complete, the focus shifts from climbing the standings to preparing for Wrentham. Two competitions, an invitational championship and opportunities for both adult and youth winners, make for a finish worth following in the NEBS season.
