Informational Tidbit: What Are Dude Candles?

Dude Candles are self-described as such: “You don’t smell the grill first…you smell the sauce! BBQ captures the unmistakable aroma of sweet, tangy barbecue sauce simmering over open hickory. Rich tomato, brown sugar, savory spices, and a touch of hickory smoke come together in a fragrance that’s surprisingly authentic and guaranteed to make your stomach growl. It’s the moment the ribs get their final glaze, pulled pork piled high on a bun, and chicken fresh off the grill with that sticky, caramelized finish everyone fights over. Whether you’re the family grill master or simply counting the days until cookout season, BBQ brings that backyard tradition indoors with a scent that’s bold, playful, and unlike anything else in your candle collection. Fair Warning: You may find yourself asking what’s for dinner!”

What Are Dude Candles Made From?

WAX: Dude Candle uses a soy blend that combines both soy and paraffin wax. “We do this because, quite simply, it makes the best-burning and best-scented candle. If we truly produce a 100 percent soy candle, it will clearly be labeled as such. Otherwise, we label it a soy blend. We believe in honesty!”

Wicks: “We use various wick types depending on the wax and fragrance formulation blend, but in most instances, they are all cotton or paper core wicks. We never use lead or zinc wicks.”

Fragrance Oils: “Each scent is a careful blend of fragrance oil to create our own unique line of candles. It’s often thought that candles use essential oils for fragrance…and this is somewhat incorrect! For fragrance to bond with the wax molecules, it must be a specialty type of oil. If we use essential oils in any of our candles, it’s typically as an accent fragrance and does not constitute the base or the bulk of the fragrance’s scent.”

Phthalate Free: All fragrance oils used in the making of Dude Candles are “phthalate free. This is a positive step forward in ensuring we reduce any risks to human health.”

Gossip Tidbit: Who is Dude Candle?

“Dude Candle” is a one-man small business based in Greer, South Carolina; originally established in Arroyo Grande, California. Owner Matt Reilly says, “I think it’s important to know that I’m ‘A 1 Man Show!’ right now! I do everything at Dude Candle myself. I’m the web designer, photographer, and graphic artist.

Scent development, packaging design, candle production, and shipping are also performed by me.” Matt continues, “I founded Dude Candle to start with a few core scents that I couldn’t find out there. The initial intent was to create a line of ‘Powersports Scented Candles.’ Over time, the line continues to expand with new scents every month—appealing to both Dudes and Dude-ettes!”

The move from California to South Carolina, with its continued trails, deserts, mountains, coastal living, and southern style, all leads to GREAT inspiration for current and future candle scents.” Matt Reilly has stated that: “Every scent starts with a real place, memory, hobby, or experience that I personally truly enjoy. Whether it’s ‘Race Fuel,’ ‘Rain on the Driveway,’ ‘Pipe Tobacco,’ or ‘Sawdust,’ I build candles around recognition—the moment someone smells it and immediately says, ‘Yup—that’s it!’”

Tidbit of NEWS: What is “A Note” When Describing Scents?

A “NOTE” is used to describe how a candle scent will smell as you burn it. Matt says, “It’s similar to the language used to describe Fine Wines and Whiskeys. There’s the way the whiskey smells, the way that it tastes, and then the aftertaste that it leaves when you are done drinking. Describing candle fragrance uses the same technique.”

  • Top Note: This is the first note you sense when you smell a candle. This indicates the overall direction of the intended scent and delivers your first aromatic impression.
  • Middle Note: These are the more complex elements of the overall scent, often representing the largest portion of a candle’s fragrance delivery. The complexity of the combined scents to make the “HEART” of the candle fragrance make the middle notes the most descriptive and variant.
  • Base Note: This is the heavier, longer-lasting, most affected scent that remains after the candle has burned. “It’s the final scent you’re left with that leaves you with your lasting impression.”

Matt Reilly explains: “To gauge a fragrance’s authenticity is purely subjective! Each individual judges for themselves if a scent is strong, weak, or matches your interpretation of a scent. For example, the way you prepare a barbecue is completely different from the way your neighbor would prepare theirs. The wood, the smoker, the marinade, the seasonings… are different for everyone!”

An EXCEEDINGLY Interesting Fact Tidbit: Olfactory

“OLFACTORY: describes anything to do with, or that relates to, the sense of smell.”

The olfactory nerve is the first cranial nerve (CN 1) and is entirely responsible for our source of smell. Our sense of smell connects directly to our brain’s emotional center. Airborne scent molecules travel from the nose to the olfactory bulb, sending signals straight to the limbic system. The amygdala is the emotional core of the brain. The amygdala received olfactory signals rapidly, generating immediate feelings before you can even fully process what you are smelling! The hippocampus sits right next to the emotional processor, and this region ties scents directly to long-term and episodic memories. “Unlike sight or sound, smell skis the thalamus—the brain’s main relay station—making the emotional impact faster and more visceral,” states www.news.harvard.edu

  • Nostalgia and Past Events: Childhood associations with specific aromas often create vague, powerful feelings of nostalgia and/or familiarity.
  • Mood Shifts: Certain aromas can reduce stress, ease anger, or alter your immediate psychological state through these shared neural pathways
  • When you chew, molecules in the food make their way back retro-nasally, meaning that, essentially, “all of what you consider flavor is smell! When you are eating the all the beautiful, complicated flavors…they are smell!” says Professor Venkatesh Murthy, Chair of Harvard’s Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology.
  • For decades, individuals and businesses have explored ways to harness the evocative power of smell!
  • “At its most essential level, smell is emotion; our aware perception of scent and our experience of emotion are neuroanatomically interconnected and interactive,” describes the www.pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Thus, when we smell BBQ deliciousness smoking, roasting, broasting, or cooking on a grill- the scent of burning hickory or cherry wood, charcoal alight in our neighbor’s yard, or the wafting, delectable aroma of any BBQ smoke… including those aromas found in “Dude Candles,” those scents easily trigger strong memories of our most precious days of summer, of backyard family gatherings, and the essential aromas of the comfort of our childhood.

That is the scientific basis for why, upon smelling BBQ, we automatically WAX NOSTALGIC. We feel sentimental about days long gone, reminiscent of past times, events, experiences, and adventures. Dan Harris quotes, “We live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation. We wax nostalgic for prior events during which we were doubtless ruminating or projecting. We cast forward to future events during which we will certainly be fantasizing.” Therefore…Fire up that grill! LIGHT THOSE DUDE CANDLES! Sleep out under the stars! Congregate around those bonfires! Alight that charcoal! Set your smokers to low and slow! Gather together your BBQ Brethren and indulge in as much BBQ Bliss as possible!
